Abstract
This objective of this study was to examine the epidemiological characteristics of injured elderly inpatients in Korea, aged 65 or older, who were hospitalized between 2004 and 2013due to accidental fall.

The hospitalization rate due to accidental fall of elderly Koreans aged 65 or older was 2,336 per 100,000 in 2013; female patients were 1.8 times more susceptible to falls as compared to their male counterparts (2,842 females versus 1,620 males). Meanwhile, the elderly aged 75 or older were twice as likely to experience accidental falls as compared to seniors aged 65 to 74 at a rate of 3,288 per 100,000. The rate increased with age and has risen annually since 2004 (1,534 per 100,000).

Falling caused fractures in 75% of the elderly patients: it accounted for hospitalization of 82% of women aged 75 or older. This proportion was 20% greater than men, which also led to serious restrictions in their independent lives. As for injured body parts, the legs, head, and neck were commonly damaged among elderly men, whereas the legs and backbone were usually injured among their female peers. The main cause of hospitalization due to falling was hip fractures, accounting for 20.7% of cases for those aged 65 or older while it was as high as 29% for women aged 75 or older.
